So, this summer we bought a fixer upper home and the last several months have been filled with packing, endless projects and unpacking and stacked up “what do i do with this stuff?” boxes and organizing and throwing away lots of things and tantrums and autism highs and lows with Molly and those sweet first steps for Thomas and my sassy little Sam starting pre-school and so many deep breaths and an abundance of joy, laughter and exhaustion. And all of this is to say that I haven’t blogged in awhile and so I’m stealing a minute to share some photos from this sweet Evanston family session and muse for a moment about family photography. This family had such a chill way of relating to one another – their love is so naturally and sweetly on display. And as a matter of fact, I have adored every family I have worked with this season. I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting on my approach and “voice” as a family photographer lately and was thinking about how each session is like an artistic collaboration. I position and prompt and think about light, angles and composition, but each family brings their own dynamic, their own unique way of interacting with each other that I can’t create on my own. It’s like each family brings the raw ingredient of their love for each other and I just ask them to play and show that to me so I can give it back to them in images. And I love doing it, so much.
